2nd Congressional District - Nebraska

Denise Powell (Democratic Party)
Brinker Harding (Republican Party)
Eric Foreman (Libertarian Party)

In the Second Congressional District race there was no incumbent due to the retirement of Rep. Don Bacon.  Brinker Harding is the Republican Party’s nominee as he was unopposed in the Republican primary.  Mr. Harding is currently a member of the Omaha City Council.

Denise Powell is the Democratic Party’s nominee for the Second Congressional District (https://deniseforcongress.org/).  Ms. Powell emerged as the winner in a toughly-fought close primary contest with six candidates seeking the nomination.  Unfortunately, as with most close primary contests, there linger some rough edges between the different factions in this contest that need to heal.  Ms. Powell describes herself as a mom, small business owner, public school champion and healthcare advocate who knows that a strong work ethic and a love of family and community is the Nebraska way of life.  Ms Powell’s website highlights “Fight for Democracy, defend the Constitution and the nation” as one of her priorities.

Eric Foreman is the Libertarian Party nominee.  As such, Mr. Foreman is unlikely to garner a high number of votes and will likely serve as a potential spoiler in this close contest.

Over the course of the campaign, both Ms. Powell and Mr. Harding should be questioned about their positions on voting rights, human rights, Congressional oversight, Congress’s role in declaring war, and their interpretation of the Congressional oath of office.

Mr. Brinker’s positions on the threats to our democracy from the Trump Administration’s authoritarian policies are largely unknown, as he had no opponent in the primary.  He should be challenged to define his positions in these areas.  What is known is that if Mr. Brinker is elected, he would likely serve to help continue the Republican Party’s control of the Congressional agenda and therefore continue Congress’s rubber-stamping of the Trump agenda.

At this time, because of Ms. Powell strong statement on the need to defend our democracy and the likelihood that Mr. Brinkman would vote to extend the Republican Party control of Congress, we believe that the election of Denise Powell would more likely further the defense of our democracy rather than the election of either Brinker Harding or Eric Foreman.
