Post-Primary Election Thoughts on Stand Up Nebraska Support for Candidates
The Nebraska Primary Elections are over and the results are in. Pro-democracy activists now have a little more than five months to do what we can to help elect public officials who will work with us to defend our democracy and Constitution. It is time for us to collectively take stock of the results and make strategic assessments of where we might best apply our limited resources to help elect public officials who will honor their oath of office and help defend our Constitution.
It would be great if we had reason to believe that some of the incumbents currently in office would honor their oath of office and work with us to aggressively defend our Constitution. Unfortunately, by their past actions, our incumbent Senators, Representatives, and Governor have shown little inclination and/or courage to stand up to the current President and his authoritarian administration.
In an effort to encourage our members of Congress to be proactive in defending our democracy, we have published in five Nebraska papers an open letter calling on them to honor their oath of office and “Defend Our Democracy”. This open letter has now been publicly endorsed by over 2,300 Nebraskans from over 150 Nebraska towns and cities. Members of our Stand Up Nebraska team have also met with the staff of our Senators and with the staff of Rep. Flood and Smith. We have also met personally with Rep. Flood and Rep. Smith to encourage them to defend our democracy.
Unfortunately, nothing from those meetings with our elected public officials, nor from their actions and remarks since, has given us much hope that they will be the fighters for democracy that we currently need and want. Therefore we, of necessity, must look for and help to elect alternatives for these elected public officials.

On the plus side, we are fortunate to have viable, pro-democracy candidates for most of the key public offices up for election this cycle. None of these candidates are perfect, down the line, on all of the wide-ranging issues about which we care about. However, on election day Nebraskans will have the choice of a credible, pro-democracy candidate in most of these key races. It is important that we continue to highlight the threats to our democracy visible via rallies, letters-to-the-editor, etc. However, our additional challenge now, as pro-democracy activists, is to get off our couch and do what we can to help elect fighters for democracy.
Each of us must decide for ourselves which candidates are most deserving of our time and money. For your information and consideration, below is an overview of some of the shared thoughts/reflections of the core Stand Up Nebraska leadership team relative to these key election races. Over the coming months, our campaign focus will be predicated on these reflections. You are certainly welcome and encouraged to join us in those efforts.
